"What is your teams philosophy? What is your mission and culture?" I came across that question on my twitter account of a coach I follow and it made me pause. It made me pause because I knew what direction I wanted our program to go but how do I get my team to follow me? How do I get them to buy in and lead with me? Do they even know our program philosophy?
That is why I have started our team series on "Leadership" but more importantly it brings us closer to our mission “Working together, learning together, growing together. In All Things, Team First!”. There is no question that not being able to practice and be together makes being a "team" hard but we need to eliminate such an excuse. My goal through this time with you is that we accomplish our mission and in that process learn to grow together as a team so we can be stronger!
Our first activity was to create a group of images that remind us of leadership. If you click on the link below you will see the one that I created. When going through the process many things came to mind but three really stuck out to me. One, was the image of Dick Winters who was a WWII solider from Easy Company of the 101st airborne. His time in the military was depicted in the book and later HBO series "Band of Brothers". Second, Ella Baker a civil rights activist who took on the process of forming a student non violent organization during the civil rights movement. Her display of courage and direction is amazing. Finally, Michael Jordan and the lasting scene that plays over in my mind of how he looked at leadership. That scene also is linked below.
All of these examples above and my other pictures are all leaders in their own way. Some are more distinguished than others but they all played a role or had a lasting impact on somebody's life in the past, present, or future. Maybe one day you will be that picture on somebody's leadership wall.
