Take a look at this image and tell me me how it relates to leadership? When you examine this picture it might not seem like much. In fact, it only has three main parts; a bag of money, hatchet, and a heart. How can this possibly relate to or exemplify leadership? Maybe a better question is why do you do what you do as a leader?
How ever you look at the image it is the symbols that act as an example for leadership. Let us examine this closer...
The bag of money acts as a "reward". Many people like the idea of leadership because it brings them things for example:
Before we answer that question lets think back to the "Last Dance" and the scene about Michael Jordan. That clip explains that Jordan was perhaps not a "likable" guy and that his methods of leadership rubbed many of his team mates that wrong way. Jordan himself even admitted somebody looking from the outside in might perceived him as a "hatchet" type of leadership.
Which leadership style is correct? The answer to this question is the last missing part of our image above and that is "heart". You see if your leadership style is more about "reward" but you provide no heart then your leadership is meaningless to those you are trying to lead. Even a "hatchet" style leadership is no good if you provide no heart behind your leadership. “This guy is simply going through the motions until you add the heart. The heart is the lifeblood of everything. It is also the conduit that allows us to connect to others. If you want to lead effectively you must start by leading from your heart.”
To quote Jordan, "Winning has a price, leadership has a price", and for Jordan that was exhibiting a "hatchet" style of leadership. Nobody could question Jordan though on his heart! Jordan was effective because it started from his heart. You see anybody can be a leader a "reward" or "hatchet" but it you don't have heart then you are just going through the motions and that is not a leader!
