Conservative vs Liberal Beliefs
Students will be able to evaluate the criteria to decide what makes up liberal or conservative beliefs.
As we begin our unit over Ronald Reagan if there was one word we could use to explain the beliefs that Reagan championed during his presidency and life it would have to be "conservative". I can almost picture some of the faces in my classroom right now as I use that term and others like "right, left, and liberal". Usually using such words and terms would automatically make many people reach for the off button and shut down and here lies the reason for our next lesson.
Many students have no idea what it mean to be on the "left" or "right" of the political spectrum. They also don't have any idea of the political ideologies that exist in today's political landscape. As the school year progresses it will be become increasingly important that student have a working understating of political ideologies and how they apply to certain topics.
